Lot 325 - Tunisia

Tunisia. Mehmed IV. 8 reales. 1080 H (1669). (Wilski-Tun-206). (Km-10). Ag. 26,73 g. Counterstamp in Arabic script within a double square border, linear and beaded, applied to the reverse of an untrimmed 8 Reales from Potosí, minted under the reign of Philip IV. The counterstamp is strong and clear, with a pleasant, light old cabinet tone.

Extremely rare, even more so by being on no cut host coin. Fewer than a dozen examples with this type of counterstamp are known across all denominations, and this particular specimen is considered the most complete and best-preserved of all.

Austria. Leopold I. Ducat. 1680. Wien. MM. (Herinek-228). (Km-1251). Au. 3,46 g. Perfectly well defined strike and original luster. Nice color. Very rare, even more in this state of preservation.

Lot 137 - Philip V

Philip V (1700-1746). 8 escudos. 1747. Mexico. MF. (Cal-2253). (Cal onza446). Au. 27,07 g. Magnificent specimen from the last year of the reign. Shaply struck, high relief and all details perfectly visible. Only a few fine hairlines and traces of carbon on the obverse. Full luster. Very rare, especially in this exceptional state of preservation. Almost MS/Mint state.

Lot 307 - El Salvador

El Salvador. 2 reales. ND (1835). (Km-11.2). Ag. Countermark type II, “Zigzag” on 2 reales 1832 from El Salvador, which was applied to determine if the coin was good silver quality. Nice patina and a very attractive specimen. Very rare.

Lot 76 - Charles-Joanna

Charles-Joanna (1504-1555). 1 real. ND. Santo Domingo. S-P. (Sedwick/Rudman-Tipo 1R.9). (Cal-78). (Cy3060). Anv.: CRAOLVS ET : IHOANA : REX. Rev.: ✠ CAROLAS ✷ ET ✷ IOANA ✷ (REIS) ✷ E. Ag. 3,15 g. Mint mark “S” on the left and “P” on the right, with three stars at the top and one star at the bottom of the pillars.

Very well-centered struck with all details perfectly visible, with only a slight minting void affecting part of the crown and the end of the reverse legend. Dark patina with slight roughness on its surface.

This is an outstanding specimen of one of the most challenging Reales in the entire Spanish colonial series, of which only a few are known, most of them bearing defects or corrosion and rarely available at auction.

Lot 99 - Philip II

Philip II (1556-1598). 4 escudos. 1590/89. Sevilla. (Cal-892). (Tauler14a). Au. 13,46 g. S / IIII / “squared d” to the left of the shield, date vertically on the right. Clear overdate. Spectacular specimen with all details visible and legends nearly complete. Beautiful color.
We have only found 4 other examples with this overdate auctioned in the last 20 years, and this one is undoubtedly the best preserved of all. Very rare, even more so in this condition.

Slabbed by PCGS as AU 55 (Top Pop), the best-preserved specimen according to the PCGS and NGC censuses.

Philip II (1556-1598). 8 reales. 1597. Segovia. (Cal-718). (Jarabo-SanahujaA477). Ag. 27,64 g. OMNIVM type. Aqueduct with two rows of ive arches. Mintmark and value between parsley ornaments. Nice old cabinet tone and attractive iridiscent shades. Superb specimen. Very are, even more in this state of preservation.

Encapsulated by NGC as AU 55, in our opinion it should be considered a better grade. Only 2 finer specimen in the NGC and PCGS census. AU.

Catholic Kings (1474-1504). Double excelente. No mint mark. Segovia. (Cal-765). (Tauler286). Anv.: ✷FERNANDVS : ET : hELISABET : D : G : REX : ET : RE. Rev.: ·SVB : VNBRA : ALARVM : TVARVM : PROT·. Au. 6,95 g. Without mintmark. Star at the beginning of the legend. Attributed to the Segovia mint due to the style. Missing in most of the specialized collections. Extremely rare. Very few known specimens, we have only recovered 3 other specimens auctioned in the last 25 years.

King´s name and ordinal visible. Nearly complete legends. Nice color. Extremely rare, we have not encountered any auctioned specimens in the last 30 years.

Magnificent specimen with all details perfectly defined and traces of original luster. It is a delight to have in hands such a show-stopper coin. We have no doubt that this coin will garner plenty of attention from collectors. Extremely rare, even more in this high condition. Undoubtedly the best specimen known.

Charles IV (1788-1808). 8 escudos. 1795. Santiago. DA. (Cal-1760). (Cal onza1159). Au. Bust of Charles III with Ordinal IIII. Magnificent specimen with full original luster. Small planchet flaw on the obverse. Rare in this condition. NGC label error indicating the date as 1796 instead of 1795.

Mintmark (wavy lines) to left flanking by dots, value 8 in Arabic and assayer A without crossbar to right surmounted by a roundel. Soft and attractive monetary patina. Very rare in this grade.

Lot 297 - Azores

Azores. Crown countermark, intended for circulation in the Azores Islands as 300 Reis, on a 1652/31 2 Reales Segovia mint of Philip IV. Lovely patina. Magnificent specimen. This type of crown countermark was originally intended to be applied to Brazilian Reis and related fractions, authorized on June 14, 1871, and it was not until 1887 that the countermark on other foreign coins with a crown and “GP” (Governo Portugues) was mandated. Extremely rare on a Spanish peninsular coin.

Philip IV (1621-1665). 8 reales. 1629. Potosi. T. (Cal-1454). Ag. 26,87 g. Part of the king’s name is visible. The last two digits of the date are very clear. Nice patina with good eye appeal.

Philip V (1700-1746). 2 reales. 1722. Segovia. F. (Cal-956). Ag. Superb specimen, sharply struck with lovely satiny surfaces. Light toned. Truly a magnificent premium Gem example that is far superior than normally encountered for this type.
