Today we introduce you an extremely rare Charles II 8 escudos gold cob from Madrid mint, that it will be auction in our Floor Auction 50, that will be hold on February 05th, 2020 in Gran Meliá Fénix Hotel in Madrid.

Lot 399. Charles II (1665-1700). 8 escudos. (¿1696?). Madrid. (BR). (Cal 2008-20). (Cal onza-124a mismo ejemplar). (Tauler-124). Au. 27,04 g. Ex Áureo&Calicó 04/07/2013, lote 271. Calicó Onza plate coin. Lions and castles instead of castles and lions. Eight pointed stars above the value. Rosettes in the agles of the frame and fleur-de-lis in the angles of the cross. Without escutcheon of Portugal. Extremely rare. Choice VF. Est...3500,00.

 

The rarity of this beautiful piece lies in the alteration of the coat of arms of Castilla-Leon. In the first quarter we can see the lion, while the castle is in the second one. In the mint of Madrid this anomaly can only be found in the ounces by the assayer Bernardo de Pedrera y Negrete (BR in monogram) and dated 1696.

Another anomaly in this 8 escudos from Pedrera, apart from the year 1696, is the position of the value VIII that can be read in vertical from the bottom to the top. All the other Charles II’s ounces from Madrid show the value from top to bottom. For all these reasons, we consider that this is a piece with a significant numismatic value.
